ISTANBUL – GATEWAY TO THE EAST

Istanbul is a city of mosques, sultans' palaces, and oriental bazaars. Those who travel to this wonderful city will enjoy a fascinatingly different world. If you have the chance to see the silhouette of the city at sunset over the Bosphorus you will never forget this unique experience.

Istanbul can rightly claim to be one of the most historically important cities in the world.  During its long history, Istanbul was the capital city of three different world powers: the Roman Empire, then the Byzantine and finally the Ottoman Empire.  The city itself bridges the continents of Europe and Asia.

The old city lies in Europe, but you will notice right away that you are in the Orient.  At every step you will take in impressions and scents of the East. Approximately 15 million people live in the great metropolis of Istanbul.  It is a city, as cities used to be. No other large city in Europe has this kind of vivid life on the street.  On the sidewalks are shoeshine boys, perfume vendors, one can buy fresh mussels and warm sesame rings.  The throngs of people populate the boulevards and side streets, and push their way through the labyrinths of the bazaars.  There are historical sultans palaces, green parks, old wooden Ottoman buildings and graceful yet impressive mosques of all sizes.  The whole city is a living museum and testifies to the greatness of the past.
