You will depart early from Istanbul for a
visit to Bursa. Bursa was the first capital of
the Ottoman empire and an important trading
and cultural center. Bursa has some impressive
monuments from the early Ottoman period. It is
also a popular thermal center. Visits will
include the Ulu (Great) Mosque, the Silk
Market, Green Mosque, Tombs of Osman and Orhan
and the Muradiye Complex. Time permitting we
may also be able to visit the museum and see a
performance of the shadow puppets Hacivat and
Karagoz. Return to Istanbul. L

BURSA AND CUMALIKIZIK TOUR (2 DAYS)

DAY 1
ISTANBUL - CUMALIKIZIK - BURSA
We will depart Istanbul in the morning and
visit the village of Cumalikizik. It is said
that Osman Gazi, founder of the Ottoman Empire
established seven villages for his seven sons
nearly seven hundred years ago. This is one of
the villages on the slopes of Ulu Mountain.
The narrow streets have cobblestones and the
ground floor of the houses have exterior stone
walls reinforced by wooden beams. The upper
floor is of timber and clay bricks. Free time
in the village. Lunch in Bursa, free time and
overnight in thermal hotel or hotel category
of your choice. L. (D).
DAY 2
BURSA - ISTANBUL
Today we will visit the Ulu (Great) Mosque,
the Silk Market, Green Mosque, Tombs of Osman
and Orhan and the Muradiye Complex. We may
have lunch in the famous "Iskender Kebap"
restaurant. Time permitting we may also be
able to visit the museum and see a performance
of the shadow puppets Hacivat and Karagoz.

DAY 3
BURSA - IZNIK - ISTANBUL
Today we will visit Iznik, which is unique in
that most of the town is still inside the
ancient Roman Walls. This pleasant town is
also located on a lake. Iznik was famous for
the site of the 7th Ecumenical council. We
will visit the Church of St. Sophia, the city
gates, walls, Ottoman monuments and the Iznik
Museum, which is housed in the Nilufer Hatun
soup kitchen, a fine Ottoman building from the
14th century, where there are fine examples of
the Iznik tiles from the 15th to the 17th
century and other archaeological treasures.
Iznik is famous for its ceramics and the art
of tile making has been revived. It is
possible to see tiles and other ceramics
produced by the old method. Return to Istanbul.

TRILYE AND MUDANYA TOUR - PRIVATE |

Trilye and Mudanya are located near to Bursa
on the south Marmara Sea. This is a nice area
with olive orchards and small seaside towns
with ruins of old Byzantine churches and
beautiful old houses. You may want to extend
your tour to visit this region.

EDIRNE TOUR (1-2 DAYS) - PRIVATE |

Edirne, known formerly as Hadrianople was the
second capital of the Ottoman Empire. Edirne can
be toured in one long day from Istanbul or in two
days with an overnight. Edirne is situated in
Thrace, in westernmost Turkey on the border of
Greece and is known for the Selimiye Mosque, built
in the 16th century by the famous architect Sinan.
The mosque's main structure comprises 18 small
domes dominated by a huge central dome on 8
columns with 3 balconied minarets on 4 sides. A
tour will include visits to Selimiye and complex
with the archaeological and ethnographical museums
and other incredible mosques such as the Yildirim
Mosque, Eski Mosque, Muradiye Mosque, the Uc
Serefeli Mosque and the Beyazit II Mosque. |

There
are also impressive caravanserais such as the
Rustem Pasa and Ekmekcioglu Ahmet Pasa and the
lively restored Arasta and Bedesten bazaars. There
are also palaces such as the Edirne Palace, built
during the reign of Murat II and quite a few old
Ottoman houses. We may also see some beautiful
Ottoman bridges in Edirne and around the area,
such as Uzunkopru, which was also built by the
architect Sinan.

KIRKPINAR OIL WRESTLING
Edirne is also famous for grease wrestling, which
is the national sport of Turkey. Championships are
held here in late June or beginning of July each
year on Kirkpinar Island, which is located between
the Meric and Tunca rivers. Arrangements can be
made to attend Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling festivities,
where there is a variety of entertainment such as
folk or belly dancing, exhibitions and great food.
The festivities last for one week.
