Ayasofya Pansiyonlari is a complex of 10 wooden Ottoman mansions, which were built to serve the higher-ranking officials of the Ottoman Palace who were not allowed to stay inside the Topkapi Palace in the 18th century. The Turkish Touring and Automobile Association restored the houses in 1985, and they consist of between five and ten rooms, each furnished in a particular color with 19th century Turkish and European décor such as armchairs with tasseled fringes and velvet curtains. The Ayasofya Pansiyonlari are located on a narrow cobbled street outside the palace walls facing the St. Sophia, known as the "Street of the Cool Fountain". This fountain, which was a cistern from Roman times, is now a very unusual restaurant. The Ayasofya Pansiyonlari and separate Konuk Evi in the garden offer guests a warm and friendly atmosphere. All rooms have shower, toilet and direct dial telephone, NO A/C. The street in front of the houses is closed to traffic.
