INSIGHT TRAVEL AGENCY – OUR YEAR IN KAS!
We moved Insight Travel to Kas, Antalya in late
2006 after
seven years in Istanbul. After giving much thought to
the matter, it was time to discover a new area
and a new life. This didn’t change the way we do
business and we still keep our small fleet of
drivers and professional guides to take care of
you in Istanbul, and other areas such as Ephesus
and Cappadocia.
Kas is located between Fethiye and Antalya on
the Lycian Coast (Mediterranean Sea). Read more

The area is unique because
you have a combination of beautiful
mountain scenery and villages and
also wonderful small beaches, coves
and islands and historical sites of
interest. There are so many pleasant
tours and activities in the area
that it is a treasure trove for all
visitors. |

This is a carving near Kas
on the midpoint of the route, which is about 500
km from Fethiye to Antalya. Hiking the Lycian
Trail is an event of a lifetime. |
The weather around this area
is mild year round and it is possible to swim
comfortable from mid-May to mid-October, but can be
even longer. The area does not have much
precipitation but when it rains it pours!
This is in October of 2006
when we had a rain storm that brought the red earth
of the area into the sea. The view is from the
ancient amphitheater in Kas.
In Kas it is still possible
to see the fishermen (and women) mending, hanging
out and drying the nets. Many people walk along the
small harbor where we now have a pair of white
Pelicans, Geese and ducks!

Late in October 2006, a
group was completing the replica of the Uluburun
Shipwreck which is the oldest shipwreck in the world
and it sank just off a point not far from Kas around
1300 B.C.E. We watched the building of the ship.
They reproduced ingots also for the ballast, and
then the ship was sailed off to be sunk as a future
diving site. Kas is the best diving area of Turkey.

Emre went diving
this year |
We also celebrated the 29th
of October – Republic Day in Kas with fireworks,
parades, music and dance for the whole community. It
was quite an event. |
We visited the ancient site
of Xanthos, also Letoon, Patara, Sidyma, Arykanda
and other beautiful sights of the Mediterranean.
Not only that, in February
of 2007 we went to an event I have always wanted to
see - Camel Wrestling |
Rina in Demre for Camel Wrestling |
Dromedaries are very strange beasts |

A scene from the wrestling match.
But this was nothing to
compare to the Oil Wrestling Match in Uzumlu Village
that we saw in May of 2007.
This is quite a popular
event, and normally tourists go to Edirne to see the
oil wrestling later in the year, but I highly advise
anyone to be in our area in May for both the
wonderful weather and the wrestling. |
The Oil Wrestling festival
takes place in different villages around Kas and
Kalkan and there are different weight categories
that compete from different regions of Turkey. All
the villagers come with their families and there is
local food available. |
Oh
the agony of defeat! |
Also in May in Kas and towns
around Turkey there is Youth and Sports Day
This is a photo of some
of the local students who treated us to traditional
Turkish folk dances. |
And here are the boys |
Also just after this time our friends Ferit and
Chrissy re-opened the Akropol Restaurant and Bar on
the Cukurbag Peninsula just out of Kas. |
This is Chrissy coming to welcome us just after they
grand re-opening of Akropol |
If you are ever in Kas I highly
recommend the Akropol for a wonderful friendly
atmosphere, great food and drink and an incredible
360 degree view. |

We also went out sailing on the gulet whenever
possible. |
Here is the charming town of Ucagiz near Kekova
Island and Simena…. |
Well if you have read this far you will see that a
lot of things happened this year and this is not
even half. The last part of our news is that we will
be moving only a short distance across town to our permanent
location.
This is a photo taken by Rina while paragliding. If you can
see the red flag in the center of town, Insight
Travel will be located on the ground floor of the
second blue building to the left of the flag in the
center of the picture.

This is Rina paragliding (Yes I finally did it) -
Hope to see you in Kas!!
