about Safranbolu, Turkey
Safranbolu is located about 4.5 hours drive east from Istanbul and is well worth a visit. It is a small town of well-preserved Ottoman half-timbered houses in the Black Sea hill country. Safranbolu was on a major trading route to the Black Sea in the 17th c. making the town wealthy. Many patrons established caravanserais, mosques and Turkish baths and beautiful mansions were built. During a visit to Safranbolu you may walk the narrow cobblestone streets, visit some restored old houses and see traditional trades and crafts such as wood carving being practiced.
