ITINERARY: ISTANBUL - ANKARA - CAPPADOCIA – KONYA - PAMUKKALE – APHRODISIAS -EPHESUS – PERGAMON – TROY – CANAKKALE - ISTANBUL
DAY 1: (FRI) ARRIVAL
Arrival in Istanbul. Look for a sign with your name and transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul.
DAY 2: (SAT) ISTANBUL - SULTANAHMET (WALKING TOUR)
8:10 – 8:45 Departure from your hotel. Today we will visit the Saint Sophia (Haghia Sofia) which was built by the emperor Justinian in the 6th century A.D and stands over much older remains of a church. See beautiful mosaics of biblical scenes and the Byzantine emperors and empresses. We continue to the Blue Mosque, which was built in the 17th century and is the only imperial mosque with 6 minarets, then the Hippodrome, a stadium and meeting place in Byzantine times, the Serpent Pillar from Delphi and the Egyptian Obelisk, with the Fountain of Wilhelm. Visit the Caferaga Medresesi which was designed by the architect Sinan and built in the 16th century, now used as a learning center for traditional Turkish arts. We will then explore the Topkapi Palace. It was the home of the Ottoman sultans from the 15th-19th century A.D. We see the Imperial Treasury with the famous Spoonmaker Diamond. (Harem section is optional and due an extra entry fee). The tour ends in the Grand Bazaar, which has over 4000 shops full of treasures. This tour may be done completely as a walking tour. Overnight in Istanbul. B.L. **Please note that you will have a guide for Istanbul during the day and then a separate guide starting from Ankara until you arrive back in Istanbul.
DAY 3: (SUN) ISTANBUL - ANKARA - CAPPADOCIA
Transfer to the Istanbul airport between 05:00 – 06:00 for morning flight to Ankara. Upon arrival you will be picked up from the Ankara airport. The tour starts with the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, which is located in a restored bazaar. The museum has the most unique and priceless collection of artifacts dating back to the prehistoric era. Then we will continue with the Mausoleum of Ataturk, which serves as a tribute to the founder of modern Turkey. We will then begin our drive to Cappadocia. Overnight in Cappadocia. L.D.
DAY 4: (MON) CAPPADOCIA
Today we explore Cappadocia with the underground city of Kaymakli and the see the natural Citadel of Uchisar. We will then visit the Goreme Valley and the Open Air Museum featuring ancient churches with colorful frescoes, which are hewn from the rock. The next stop is Pasabagi Valley (Zelve region), with its vineyards, volcanic cones and monk’s dwellings. We will then visit the famous pottery center of Avanos. Overnight in Cappadocia. B.L.D.
DAY 5: (TUE) CAPPADOCIA – KONYA – PAMUKKALE
We will depart early in the morning for Konya, visiting the 13th century Seljuk caravansary of Sultanhani. The next stop will be Konya with the Mevlana Museum. Home of the famous “Whirling Dervishes. Arrive in Pamukkale and overnight in Pamukkale. B.L.D.
DAY 6: (WED) PAMUKKALE – APHRODISIAS - KUSADASI
In the morning visit the ancient site of Hierapolis, including Theater, Apollo Temple and Necropolis, then the Calcium Terraces of Pamukkale. Today we will also visit the Greco-Roman site of Aphrodisias with the Museum, Temple of Aphrodite, the Theater, the Stadium, the Agora, Hadrian’s Baths and the Odeon. Continue to Kusadasi through the Meander Valley and overnight in Kusadasi. B.L.D.
DAY 7: (THU) EPHESUS – HOUSE OF VIRGIN MARY- BASILICA OF ST JOHN - ISTANBUL
Today we will visit the House of Virgin Mary, then Ephesus with the Library of Celsius, temple of Hadrian, agora and fantastic Greco-Roman theater and the Basilica of St. John. Overnight in Kusadasi. B.L.D.
DAY 8: (FRI) – KUSADASI – PERGAMON AESCLEPION – TROY - CANAKKALE
Today we will visit the Asclepion of Pergamon, which was a famous center of healing in the ancient world. Galen, who originated from Pergamon and became the most famous doctor of his time, treated his patients here. Finally we drive to Troy, the legendary city of Homer, which has nine principal levels of occupation covering a period of 3000 years. Dinner and overnight in Canakkale. B.L.D.
DAY 9: (SAT) – CANAKKALE – ISTANBUL
After breakfast we will begin the drive to Istanbul. We will cross the Dardanelles by ferry and visit the WWI battlefields of Gallipoli. Return to Istanbul and overnight in Istanbul. B.L
DAY 10: (SUN) - DEPARTURE
Transfer to airport for departure. (B).
