It was the largest Christian church in the world for nearly a thousand years. Inside the former church you will see more than 100 columns and the monograms of the Byzantine emperors Justianian and Theodora as well as delicate mosaics and huge medallions with calligraphy from the time it was converted to a mosque. We continue our walk to the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) built in the 17th century and the only imperial mosque in Turkey with 6 minarets. The name comes from the 20,000 + Iznik tiles which are in its interior and the upper levels of the Mosque are dominated by blue paint. We are a short walk from the Hippodrome known for its famous chariot races during Byzantine times. The races were hugely popular with the masses and the winning charioteers were acclaimed as heroes. Musicians, dancers, acrobats, and animal trainers amused the crowd during race intermissions. See the Serpent Column of the Plataian tripod, a 5th-century BCE dedication looted from the sacred sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, the Egyptian Obelisk and the Fountain of Wilhelm the German Emperor. We will see a small masterpiece of the architect Sinan called the aferagaMedresesi, built in the mid 1600’s. It is now a place where students learn to make arts and crafts in the Turkish style. Our next visit will be to the 15th century Topkapi Palace (Entrance to the Harem is not included). This structure has a series of gates such as the Imperial Gate, the Gate of Salutation and the Gate of Felicity with also a series of courtyards. Also the Imperial Council where grand vizier would lead the meetings and Sultan behind the (grating) could not be seen. We make an enjoyable visit to the Grand Bazaar with over 4000 shops. It is one of the oldest and largest markets in the world and almost like a city within a city.  **Note that on Sunday the Grand Bazaar is closed and on Tuesday the Topkapi Palace is closed.
