DAY 2 BYZANTINE AND OTTOMAN TREASURES OF ISTANBUL
8:10 – 8:45 Departure. The Saint Sophia (Hagia Sofia – meaning “Divine Wisdom”) which was built in the 6th century is our first stop.  It took only five years and the work of nearly 11,000 people to erect the structure that was the largest Christian church in the world for nearly a thousand years. The gigantic central dome over a rectangular plan was built using special bricks. We stroll through the gardens and fountains to the Blue Mosque. The design of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque is the culmination of two centuries of both Ottoman mosque and Byzantine church developments. The interior features 20,000 tiles made under the supervision of the Iznik master potter KasapHaci and Baris Efendi from Cappadocia.More than 200 stained glass windows with intricate designs admit natural light. We see the Hippodrome. In 1204 CE, during the Fourth Crusade, the four horses from the sculpture at the end of the race track were looted. They are probably those which were taken to Venice, where they still reside today, in the Cathedral of St Mark. We will also see the Snake Pillar, Egyptian Obelisk of Thutmos III and a fountain which is a gift of the German Emperor Wilhelm. Next is the Medrese (Madrasah) of Caferaga built in 1559. Next we continue to the Topkapi Palace (Entry to the Harem is not included). Construction of the palace started after 1460 and ended in 1478. It is located on Sarayburnu with a view over the Marmara Sea, The Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. We enter through the Imperial Gate which is vaulten and on both side there are engraved Tugras (monograms) of Sultan Mahmud II and Abdulaziz. Spaces by the door were Janissary quarters. We continue through the other gates and courtyards visiting the privy chambers of the sultans, the treasury with the Topkapi Dagger and the Spoonmaker Diamond, and also see relics of the Prophet Mohammed brought from Egypt in the 16th century CE. We end the tour visit a visit to the incredible Grand Bazaar built originally by Mehmet the Conquerer in the 15th century. **Note that on Sunday the Grand Bazaar is closed and on Tuesday the Topkapi Palace is closed. (In winter St Sophia is closed on Monday and is replaced by the Yerebatan Saray Underground Cistern) Overnight in Istanbul. B. L.
