DAY 2 WALKING IN SULTANAHMET ISTANBUL
8:10 – 8:45 Departure. The first place we visit is the Saint Sophia (Hagia Sofia) which was used as a church for 916 years but, following the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmed, it was converted into mosque and used for 482 years. Later converted into a museum in 1935 it is truly an impressive edifice. Equally as impressive is the Sultan Ahmet Mosque – Blue Mosque, which was built the architect Mehmet Aga under order of the Sultan. He was a pupil of the famous architect Sinan. Our discovery of old Istanbul takes us then to the Hippodrome. The Hippodrome was around 400 meters (1300 feet) in length and up to 200 meters wide. One lap of the track would have measured around 300 meters (1000 feet). Estimates range from 30,000 to over 60,000 people seating capacity. We can also see the Egyptian Obelisk from Karnak and the charming Fountain of Wilhelm with its mosaics and the Serpent Pillar. We walk to the CaferagaMedresesiwhich is a charming building and a peaceful oasis. It was built by order of Suleyman the Magnificent in 1560 as a school, it now houses a cultural organization that teaches and promotes traditional Turkish handicrafts. Our walk takes us to the Imperial gate of the Topkapi Palace, which was built on the ancient acropolis. (Please note that entry to Harem is not included). The Palace was first used in 1478. You will see the treasury which has incredible jewels, the relics of Mohammed, the Privy chambers of the Sultans which have excellent examples of tiles, stained glass and decorative fireplaces. To end our day we make an enjoyable visit to the Grand Bazaar where you can buy all sorts of souvenirs. **Note that on Sunday the Grand Bazaar is closed and on Tuesday the Topkapi Palace is closed. (In winter St Sophia is closed on Monday and is replaced by the Yerebatan Saray Underground Cistern) Overnight in Istanbul. B. L.
